Moeen Ali played a crucial role for the England side with the willow in the first innings of the 4th Test match against India. The left-handed batsman scored a valuable 35 off 71 deliveries for the Joe Root-led side and frustrated the Indian bowlers.

And, his stay out in the middle could have been cut short if the Indian side had been more alert and appealed at the right time. Off the 5th ball of the 60th over bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, Moeen Ali was wrapped on the pads. But then, none of the Indian players went for the appeal.

And, replays confirmed that the ball had not made contact with the bat, and would have crashed onto the stumps. You can see the image of the same below.

Moeen Ali’s partnership with Chris Woakes helps England to a handy first-innings lead

Moeen Ali survived for more than 7 overs after that, and finally, it was left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja who scalped the wicket of the England all-rounder. However, by then, the damage was done, as Ali had stitched together a partnership of 71 runs for the 7th wicket alongside Chris Woakes, who scored a quickfire 60-ball 50.

And, it was the partnership between Ali and Woakes that shifted the game in England’s favour, and helped them post a total of 290 on the board, thus gaining a 99-run lead over the Virat Kohli-led Indian side in the first innings. Ollie Pope top-scored for England in the first innings, helping himself to a calm and composed 81 off 159 deliveries.

India produced a good performance in the second innings on the final session of Day 2. Both the Indian openers, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were solid out in the middle and comfortably negotiated 16 overs, as the visitors ended Day 2 with their scorecard reading 43/0. India are still trailing England by 56 runs.

The four-match series is evenly poised at 1-1. The first Test match at Nottingham ended in a draw, and India thrashed the England outfit by 151 runs in the second rubber. Joe Root and his men walloped India by an innings and 76 runs in the third Test match.
