England announced their limited overs squad for the Royal London ODI series against Ireland and South Africa and also for the Champions trophy scheduled to start in June in their home territory. Mark Wood and David Willey are the two changes from the previous squad which played against West Indies. While Wood played his last international match way back in September, left-arm seamer David Willey missed their last assignment against the Caribbeans.

Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes have not been named in the ODI squad for the Ireland series due to their IPL commitments. All these 3 players are integral members of their respective franchises and their performance has huge bearing on the outcome of the match given their exceptional all-round abilities.

Southpaw Ben Duckett and fast bowler Steven Finn has been included for the series against Ireland but doesn’t find a spot for the Champions Trophy. According to a media release by ECB, James Whitaker said: “We have made encouraging progress over the past 18 months in white ball cricket and the squads selected reflects consistency and gives options across all disciplines.

“It is pleasing that Mark Wood and David Willey have returned to full fitness. They add variety and quality to our bowling strengths and David’s ability as an attacking batsman is also an important element for us.

“The squads selected reflects consistency and gives options across all disciplines” As we build-up to the ICC Champions Trophy in June, matches against Ireland and South Africa are very important in their own right as we aim to win both series.”
