England v Pakistan 2nd Test, Day 1 – Statistical Highlights

England batsmen utilized the conditions on the first day of the 2nd Test at Old Trafford as the Pakistan bowlers had to sweat out for wickets. Alastair Cook and Joe Root scored centuries putting a huge stand between themselves as England had 314/4 on the board at the end of 1st day’s play. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the day.

3 – Alastair Cook became the 3rd captain to score a century in his 50th Test match as captain.

4 – Number of boundaries Mohammad Amir has conceded in the first over in the three innings in this series. He conceded just 5 off bat in the 17 innings in his first stint when he bowled the 1st over.

5 – Number of wickets Mohammad Amir has taken in this series so far. All of them are bowled wickets.

7 – Number of oppositions against whom Joe Root has scored centuries in Test cricket. He hasn’t yet played a Test against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

11 – Number of centuries Alastair Cook has scored while acting as captain in Tests, joint most by any England captain. Graham Gooch also has 11.

25y 205d – Age at which Joe Root has hit his 10th Test century. He is the 2nd youngest England player after Alastair Cook (25y 1d) to score 10 Test centuries.

31 – Number of fifty plus Alastair Cook has scored while acting as captain in Tests, the most by any England captain.

51 – Number of centuries Alastair Cook has scored while opening in Test cricket, joint 2nd most by any player. Sunil Gavaskar has 33, Matthew Hayden has 30 while Graeme Smith has 27.

50 – Number of matches Alastair Cook has led England in Test cricket. He became the 4th England player to lead his side in 50 Test matches.

186 – Balls bowled by Yasir Shah in this game without taking a wicket. These are the most he has bowled for a wicket in Test innings. He bowled 30 overs before picking a wicket vs Bangladesh in Khulna in 2015.

2013 – Cook and Root scoring centuries is the first instance for England since Wellington Test vs New Zealand in March 2013 where two of the top 2 players in England side scored centuries.
