England beat India in the third T20I by 17 runs at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on July 10, Sunday. India, after winning the first two games, clinched the series with a 2-1 lead. This was also England’s first win since Jos Buttler took over the captaincy from Eoin Morgan.

England won the toss and batted first, and Buttler walked in with Jason Roy to open the innings. During the first six overs of the powerplay, the hosts put up 52 on the board at the loss of one wicket. Butler was the first one to depart, scoring 18 runs off nine balls. Roy departed in the eighth over after scoring 27 runs off 26 balls, while Phil Salt followed after a short stay of 8 off 6 balls.

It was Dawid Malan, who came in at number three, and top-scored for the team with 77 runs off 39 balls. Liam Livingstone put the finishing touch with a quickfire 42 off 29 balls, along with Chris Jordan’s cameo of 11 off three balls, taking England to 215. Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi was the pick of the Indian bowlers, finishing with figures of two wickets for 30 runs in four overs.

Suryakumar Yadav’s maiden ton goes in vain

India started off slowly, losing their openers Rohit Sharma (11 off 12) and Rishabh Pant (1 off 5). Virat Kohli also failed to contribute as he departed for 11 off 6 as India were at 31 for the loss of three wickets after five overs. At this stage, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer were on crease and added 119 runs for the fourth wicket.

Iyer departed for 28 off 23 balls in the 16th over, while Yadav also followed later in the 19th over after scoring 117 off 55 balls. This was his maiden T20I hundred and also became the fifth Indian to do so. India ended with 198 for the loss nine wickets, and the pick of the English bowlers was pacer Reece Topley with figures of three wickets for 22 runs in four overs.

Losing skipper, Rohit Sharma said:

I thought it was a fantastic chase although we fell short. We are proud of the fight. Surya was magnificent to watch. I have been watching him for a while now. Loves this format, has wide range of shots. He has grown from strength to strength since we got him into the squad. They put us under pressure with their batting.

Decent partnership put us on the back foot. You back yourself to get this score. We were clear in trying out guys if they can bowl 4 overs. We have things to work on as a group. Hope so. So far things are pretty good. We don’t want to sit on laurels. We want to get better every game. Today was a great learning for us as to bowl to come out and bowl. And to bat as well. Games like this will teach you.

Winning skipper, Jos Buttler said:

Good fun to play, fantastic game. I thought we had a slightly above-par score. Unbelievable innings from SKY. I thought Reece Topley bowled into the wicket and took pace off really well. It was pleasing to see Gleeson back up with another performance. CJ was good too.

We are blessed with options. Lot of all-rounders in there as well. We bat deep. It was difficult decision but Mo was keen to bowl, selfless character. CJ has had a great series. Bowled some tough overs and he has looked in fantastic shape and got the rewards.

Player of the Match, Reece Topley said:

Some great knocks today, but I am happy. Different batters, some are set and some aren’t. You just want to come out and restrict runs. We wanted to take early wickets. There was an unbelievable knock from their side. I was speechless by some of shots, unbelievable. I am absolutely fit and ready for the summer, long way to go.
