It seems that the norm of the T20I series is being repeated for the One-Day Internationals as well. The first match was won single-handedly by Kuldeep Yadav for the visitors after which England made a stunning comeback to force the series into the decider to see their most criticised batsman coming back into the form when they most needed. Joe Root was the man to stand tall for them today as he registered his 12th ODI ton and helped them post a daunting total at Lord’s.

England almost gave away the perfect start once again by gifting wickets to Kuldeep Yadav early on in his spell. But then their Test and ODI skipper joined hands and stitched a partnership of 103 runs to bring the innings back on track. The chinaman broke the partnership again to trigger a mini-collapse for the hosts. But Root continued to play his way and kept the scoreboard moving.

He found an able partner in David Willey who started smashing the ball from the word go and caught the Indian bowling attack off guard. From a hapless position of 239/6, they managed to post a brilliant total of 322 runs after 50 overs. Root remained unbeaten on 113 runs while was dismissed off the very last delivery but not before scoring 50 runs off just 31 balls.

Visitors struggle against spinners

Rohit Sharma failed to replicate his form in the steep chase. But his partner Shikhar Dhawan managed to get India off to a great start with a 36-run knock. However, he could not continue in the same vein to put the untested middle-order under pressure. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina batted well then but they were never allowed to break free by the spinners who were excellent.

Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali conceded only 80 runs in the 20 overs they bowled and went on to pick 3 wickets. Meanwhile, Kohli’s wicket was the turning point of the game as the batsmen who followed found it tough to get going. Raina also perished for 46 runs and left a little too much to do for MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya. The former, however, was guilty of playing a strange knock of 37 runs.

It was only a matter of time for England to close out the game as the visitors were bundled out for 236 runs. England won the game by 86 runs and levelled the series to take in into the decider. Twitterati was once again at his best making memes throughout the game and Dhoni was trolled for his slow innings which was not acceptable given the situation of the match.
