The first ball of the first Test is yet to kiss the pitch and the psychological war between India and England has already picked steam. After England quick James Anderson’s ‘lying’ jibe at Indian captain Virat Kohli, it is the turn Essex Cricket to take an oblique dig at him.

On Wednesday, July 25, as Kohli produced a half-century (68) off 93 balls against the county side in a three-day game at Chelmsford ahead of the first Test at Edgbaston starting August 1, Essex Cricket’s Twitter handle came up with a video of Kohli’s batting accompanied with a teasing remark “This guy’s not bad at cricket…”

While the video showing Kohli reaching his fifty with a boundary had nothing objectionable, Kohli’s fans had a lot to object to the one-liner which they perceived as a deliberate poke at the Indian captain who had a disastrous tour of England in 2014, accumulating just 134 runs in 10 innings.

While Kohli has hit runs in all countries and on all surfaces, scoring in Tests versus England in their den is something he is yet to achieve and the upcoming series will be a massive test of his batsmanship to conquer the ‘final frontier’. The English know that very well and have perhaps executed a plan to continuously poke Kohli on that matter.

Kohli, however, showed a good batting form during the limited overs game in this tour and also played a decent inning in the three-day game in challenging conditions. He came out at No. 5 after India were reduced to 44 for 3 on a lively wicket and put on a 90-run partnership with the other half-centurion Murali Vijay (53) before getting caught. He was later pushed to the place of the second highest scorer in the innings by wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik who remained not out on 82 at No. 7.

Here are some Tweets for the same

Coming back to the tweet, Kohli’s fans did not take it lying down and came up with their response to it.

One said: “Whole world know he is a run machine in world cricket nd u guys know now”.

Another said: “Baap hai wo tumahara” (he is your master)

A third said: “The caption should be … This guy’s unbelievable in cricket.”
