India and England will reignite their limited-overs rivalry with the three-match ODI series on Thursday in Nottingham. The visitors have drawn first blood on the tour with a series victory in the shortest format of the game. They will be hoping to continue in the same vein but are left fretting over the fitness of their ace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar ahead of the first ODI.

Bhuvi missed out the deciding T20 International in Bristol played on Sunday due to his back issues. Siddarth Kaul replaced him for the game and did a decent job. India went on to win the game and the series eventually but the ODIs are a completely different ball game and they will be hoping that their new-ball bowler hits the straps soon. Moreover, the absence of Jasprit Bumrah in this series has left a hole in the bowling line-up of the Men in Blue.

Will he play?

Rohit Sharma, while speaking in the pre-match press conference, cleared that the physio is looking over the fitness of Bhuneshwar Kumar. According to him he was fine and ready to take the field for the first game but didn’t assure anything as of now.

“Bhuvi has obviously come here to train and he’s going to see how the net session goes for him. He’s going to try and bowl and see how he feels. Obviously, the physio and the captain will take the call later once he finishes his training sessions but he looks fine to me as of now. So hopefully he will be ready to take the field tomorrow,” he said when one of the reporters asked him about the fast bowler’s chances of playing the game.

The Indian team management will be praying that Bhuvi gets fit in time for the encounter else the bowling line-up will be left wanting for experience in demanding conditions. Kaul is the likeliest bowler to replace Bhuvi in case he is deemed unfit.
