Siddarth Kaul was a part of the Indian U19 team, which won the 2007-08 World Cup in Malaysia under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. He turned out to be one of India’s most successful bowlers with 10 wickets from five matches. Prior to his successful stint with the Colts, he made his first-class debut for Punjab. Ever since, he has played 52 first-class, 62 List A, and 85 T20s.

However, he somehow couldn’t grab the eyes of the selectors. While his U19 skipper went on to smash a number of records, the pacer strained at the domestic level. Nevertheless, he finally made his way into the national team last month when India locked horns with Ireland in a T20I in Dublin. Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian batsman, believes that Kaul has the potential to get into the Test side as well.

“Siddarth has been around first-class cricket for quite a while but has had a longer wait to for an India cap. If he continues to do well he could be close to a Test cap,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

The turning point

The year 2018 has been massive for Siddarth’s career. He played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL. In the event, he was their joint-highest wicket-taker with 21 wickets from 17 matches. His ability to adjust according to different phases of a match couldn’t elude the eyes of the national selectors. Subsequently, he was drafted into the limited-overs squad for India’s tour of the United Kingdom.

After the first match against Ireland, Kohli talked about making some experiments and giving everyone an opportunity. In the second encounter, Kaul got his maiden chance and he is currently playing the ODI series against England. The 28-year-old fast-bowler would now be keen to string together some decent shows in international cricket and stake his claim in the Test team.
