After a 13-wicket first day, the slightly eased-out batting conditions meant that only seven wickets fell on the second, which saw fifties from Ollie Pope (81) and Chris Woakes (60) that granted England a crucial 99-run lead after they had resumed on 53/3.

Having lost two quick wickets, those of nightwatchman Craig Overton and Dawid Malan, in the morning session, England’s batting was held together by Pope, who was indulged in two vital lower-order alliances: 89 for the 6th wicket alongside Jonny Bairstow (37) and 71 for the 7th alongside Moeen Ali (35). Comeback man Woakes, who bagged four wickets with the ball, played a role similar to India’s Shardul Thakur with the bat, as his counterattacking 60-ball 50 took England into ascendancy by the end of their innings.

With the sun beating down the track for almost the entire day, the ball did much little mischief that it did on the first day, making it not the most ideal day for bowling. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, who were both undone cheaply in the first innings, ensured that India went unscathed, ticking off 43 out of the total 99 that England had put themselves ahead.

Going by that, the bowlers might be a tad happier than yesterday, which proved to be a day for the batters.
