Former South African all-rounder, Eric Simons is in all praise of the Indian bowling attack that is currently taking on South Africa in the Proteas’ backyard. Simons, a former India coach opined about the persistence shown by the Indian bowling against a well settled SA batting lineup especially the pacers. Having known the Indian players from close quarters during his stint as a bowling consultant for two years ( 2010 to 2012 ) with the team, the former South African reckons a huge difference in the bowling attack of this Indian team considering the variety that each bowler brings in with him.

Many positives to consider

Although, India are 2-0 down in as many test matches against the South Africans, but still there are many positives to consider especially the way bowlers have fared in both the matches. “As a coach, I don’t always go according to the results. So, in both the first two Tests, India’s bowling attack has done a top job. What they did really well was have good tactics and plans in place, and they executed those plans too,” Simons said.

Indian bowlers with the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah have impressed him the most. Eric couldn’t hold on praising the lengths bowled by the Indian on pitches that always had something for the fast bowlers. The wickets in both the matches were different and demanded adjustment in terms of length, “At Centurion, they bowled fuller lengths as per the conditions and didn’t give away too many runs,” Eric said.

Bumrah was excellent in his debut series

Knowing his exploits with the white ball, Simons highlighted the youngster’s progress as a bowler. He was of the view that described Jasprit’s effectiveness even in the longest format given his deceptive action that makes it difficult for the batsmen to read him. “Suddenly something different comes along and the ball doesn’t come to you quite how you expect it to, and that tends to help the bowler. Simons even tagged Bumrah as a quick learner who is ready to listen to the people who understand the game. “He is humble, grounded and listens when people talk to him about improvement.”

Talking about the struggle made by the Indian batsmen just in order to get the flow of runs going, the all-rounder reckons about the ability to leave the ball which most of the Indian batsmen barring Ashwin have failed to adjust.”I don’t think they have left very well, especially in conditions at Cape Town,”says Eric.

Say, someone like Vernon Philander, sometimes you need to get into his channel and play him around that off-stump. If you look at how R Ashwin batted against him at Cape Town, he got behind Philander’s line and forced him to change plans,“Simons concluded.
