Mohammed Shami bowled superbly in the second Test match at Centurion. He was fantastic in the second innings, where he ran in hard and swung the ball to his ability. Shami has been marred by injuries up lately. However, he has always hit the ground running on his comebacks.
Shami was criticized after the first Test match. It was mainly because he could not contribute with wickets. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was the one who got all the wickets in the first Test match. However, Shami earned some praise from a former South African fast bowler. Fanie De Villiers was in awe of the Indian pacer.
Shami could walk into the SA side
Mohammed Shami earned himself some praise and he got it from a veteran fast bowler as well. He ran hard and worked hard for the wickets in the centurion and Fanie De Villiers loved him for that. Fanie was quoted by TOI and said that Shami could fit into this ever so competitive bowling unit of the Proteas. He loved the outswing Shami wears and also his run-up to the crease.
“Shami is a good bowler. He could play for South Africa and fit into their pace attack very well, he has a beautiful out-swinger, runs in hard, bowls at 140s, and most importantly, he consistently bowls that line to first slip,” said Fanie. De Villiers further went on to say that he bowls a line which the likes of Glenn McGrath bowled. He said, “He bowls the line Glenn McGrath did, Shaun Pollock did, Ian Botham did, Dale Steyn does, and so, he is India’s best Test bowler.”
Fanie added that in South Africa, it is important to have that outswinger and Shami has it. “When you are bowling in South Africa, it is important to have that away-swinging line. Shami has that. Hardik Pandya has that too, but he doesn’t have too much pace. Until he gets that pace he will not be a big wicket-taker,” concluded Fanie.
