Gulf Giants (GUL) will take on Desert Vipers (VIP) in the 7th match of the International Legaue T20 2024 on Wednesday (January 24) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. Giants have won and lost one match each and are placed in third position in the points tally. The Vipers lost their first game of the season and are in last position.
In the previous encounter between MI Emirates and the Giants, MI batted first, posting a competitive total of 179/9 in their 20 overs. Tim David was the star for MI, smashing a quickfire 43 runs off 17 balls. Despite a strong finish from MI Emirates, the Giants bowlers managed to keep the opposition in check.
Chasing a target of 180, the Giants faced an uphill battle as they lost wickets at regular intervals. James Vince played a crucial innings, scoring a fifty (52 off 43), but lacked substantial support from the other end. MI’s bowlers, led by Trent Boult and Fazalhaq Farooqi, kept the pressure on, restricting the Giants to 161/9 in 20 overs. MI emerged victorious, winning the match by 18 runs. Tim David was named the Player of the Match for his explosive batting performance.
The Vipers faced Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in their last match, where the Knight Riders elected to bowl after winning the toss. They had a decent start, with Munro playing aggressively and scoring a few boundaries. However, Willey dismissed Hales cheaply. The Vipers' skipper fell soon after, and they were in the process of rebuilding their innings. A 57-run stand between Hose and Hasaranga provided momentum to the Vipers. Ali Khan's entry into the attack in the 14th over proved crucial as he took three wickets, including the well-set Hose. Narine followed it up with a double-wicket over. Ali Khan and Russell were effective in the death overs, with Ali Khan finishing as the pick of the bowlers with a three-fer. The Desert Vipers finished with 164/8.
The Vipers, having set a slightly below-par total, were unable to defend against the Knight Riders' batting prowess. Andries Gous played a remarkable innings, scoring an unbeaten 95 off 50 balls, and guiding his team to success. Gous received support from Michael-Kyle Pepper and Laurie Evans, who contributed to the chase.
