Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is ready to captain the Delhi Capitals (DC) as a full-time skipper for the very first time in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL). Pant was named as DC captain after former skipper, Shreyas Iyer, was ruled out of the previous edition owing to a shoulder injury. Despite taking the role for the first time, the wicketkeeper-batter adapted to the leadership role very well and led his team to the top spot of the points table. However, DC did not qualify for the finals.

Even after consistent outings in the past few IPL editions, the Capitals have missed out on lifting the title and Pant will be hoping to change that under his captaincy. Talking about DC’s preparation ahead of the upcoming edition, Pant emphasized that the players are looking in a good frame of mind. The left-handed batter also lauded franchise head coach and veteran player Ricky Ponting’s coaching skills and said that meeting him was like meeting a family member.

It’s always special meeting Ricky Ponting: RishabhPant

Speaking on DC’s official Twitter handle, Pant said, “It’s always special meeting Ricky Ponting. Whenever I meet him, it feels like I am meeting a family member. And he always brings the energy out of every player on the field. Everyone looks up to him and waits for him to say something different.”

“It seems like the team has been made for the first time. I observed every player during my first practice session with the team and it looks like everybody is in a good frame of mind. Everybody is enjoying each other’s company,” Pant added.

Talking about Pant’s numbers in the IPL, the 24-year-old has played 84 matches in which he has scored a total of 2498 runs with an average of 35.18. The left-handed-batter has stroked 15 fifties and one century as well. Meanwhile, the Capitals are slated to start their IPL campaign against five-time champions Mumbai Indians at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on March 27 (Sunday).
