Five cricketers barred from leaving the country by Pakistan government

The second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was an extremely successful affair as far as cricket in Pakistan is concerned. But amidst all the joy of the success, the league has been plagued by the shameful incident of spot-fixing. Names of five players have come up thus far who have been charged for their involvement in the spot-fixing scandal defaming the name of their country. After the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) provisionally suspended them from participating in any cricketing activity the Pakistan government has barred the five cricketers Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan, Shahzaib Hasan and Nasir Jamshed from leaving the country. These five players have been provisionally suspended for violating the Anti-Corruption Code during the second edition of the PSL. Investigations have been going on for a long time and as a part of that Nasir Jamshed had been arrested in Britain for his role in the alleged corruption in Pakistan’s domestic T20 league. Going by the statement of the interior ministry Irfan and Latif have recorded their statements to officials of Federal Investigation Authority in Lahore on Monday while Hasan and Sharjeel are scheduled to do the same on Tuesday. A separate three- member tribunal has been formed by the PCB which includes a retired judge and a retired general to conduct its own inquiry against Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif. Irfan and Shahzaib were provisionally suspended by the board last week and were given a time of two weeks to respond to the charges against them. The first two to be held liable were Latif and Sharjeel and they were sent back home to Pakistan after the opening match of the league from the United Arab Emirates. Irfan and Hasan were allowed to complete the tournament though PCB’s ACU questioned them during the PSL. After they recorded their statements to PCB’s ACU officials in Lahore last week, both the cricketers were provisionally suspended.
