Life has never been on such a roller-coaster ride for India’s opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan. After a disappointing Test series in England which saw the pundits going after his head, the 32-year-old made a terrific comeback in the ongoing Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates, slamming two hundreds and is one of the contenders for the Man of the Series award. Dhawan’s Test journey could still be under question as he is likely to be dropped for the West Indies series at home next month.

He could manage just 162 runs in eight innings in England as the Indian team management kept on trying different opening combinations. The left-hander was dropped for the second Test at Lord’s after a poor show in the opening game following a pair in the side game. However, his replacement did not better his performance either and Dhawan was back for the remaining three matches. His best score (44) came in the third Test at Trent Bridge, the only game that India won in the series.

Dhawan, however, is unfazed over what’s in fate. He said he had “no shame” over his disastrous run in England for he never shied away from giving all even though he plans did not always deliver.

I give the best whenever I play

“I think it always helps when you perform well (irrespective of the form). Agar fayda hona hoga to ho jayega, nahi hona hoga to nai hoga (we will see if my current form helps me in Tests). Whenever I play, red ball or white ball, I utilise whatever knowledge I have of the game,” Deccan Chronicle quoted Dhawan as saying.

“If you talk about the England Test, I did not do well but I gave it all. Others played better than me. I accept it. There is no shame in it. Then I came here to play white ball cricket, had different plans because of different conditions. Sometimes they (plans) work sometimes they don’t,” Dhawan, who is known as “Gabbar” in the Indian cricketing circuit, said.

The stylish southpaw, who has scored 327 runs in four games in the Asia Cup at an average of 80-plus, said Bangladesh will pose challenges to India in the final of the tournament to be played in Dubai on September 28. Dhawan slammed 114 against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super Fours stage to register a 9-wicket victory but didn’t play in the academic game against Afghanistan which was tied.
