Ever since Chandika Hathurusingha put his papers, the position of the Bangladesh coach has remained vacant. Even though the board tried to retain him, their efforts went in vain. With BCB’s failure to find a foreign coach, Khaled Mahmud is considered a likely proposition to fill the void.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was recently in talks with former coach Andy Flower. It was learnt that while Flower appreciated the offer, he turned it down owing to his current role coaching England Lions. On the other hand, the prospect of hiring Justin Langer has also been ruled out.

Possibilities of Khalid taking over

The BCB president Nazmul Hassan stated that the former Bangladesh captain is likely to be appointed as the coach. He remarked that since they were unable to find a foreign coach, Mahmud may take over the position on an interim basis.

“If we don’t get a foreign coach before the Sri Lanka series, then we will look at a local coach, We have Khaled Mahmud Shujon; the possibilities of him taking over are highest.” Hasan was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.

Bangladesh are scheduled to play a tri-series early next year in January involving Sri Lanka and India as the other two teams.

Flower, Langer ruled out as coaching prospects

Andy Flower who is coaching the England Lions currently expressed his willingness to continue the same. While he appreciated the offer, he stated that the time wasn’t right. Flower was the coach of the World XI in their historic tour to Pakistan a couple of months ago.

On the other hand, Western Australia had roped in the services of Justin Langer in a three-year deal. Hence, Langer has been ruled out of the equation.

The reason behind Chandika’s resignation is unknown as the BCB has asked for a report from him about the same.
