Former Goa Cricket Association (GCA) president Dayanand Narvekar was questioned by the Economic Offenses cell of Goa on Wednesday (June 29) in connection with an alleged fraud of about Rs 3.13 crore involving senior officials of the state body.

“Narvekar, who was in Mumbai all these days, arrived in Goa and appeared before the investigating officer. He was questioned today for over three hours. “The former president had skipped two prior summons, but responded to a third summon issued to him. We questioned him about whether he was aware of the fraudulent withdrawals of money by the three accused and whether he was a beneficiary of the withdrawn money,” a police official familiar with the investigation said.

Chetan Desai, secretary Vinod Phadke and treasurer Akbar Mulla had been arrested by the Economic Offences Cell of the local police on June 15 based on a complaint made by Vilas Desai, a GCA life-member, that had alleged them of encashing a cheque which was handed to the GCA by the BCCI. The three officials are accused of swindling funds between 2006 and 2008.

Narvekar was the GCA president back in 2007-08 when the cheque released by BCCI was withdrawn allegedly by the trio by illegally opening an account in Development Credit Bank in Panaji.

“We are trying to know who collected the cheque from BCCI on behalf of GCA and whether there is involvement of Narvekar in the act along with three others,” the officer added.

Desai, Prasad Fatarpekar and Hemant Angle brought to the BCCI’s notice the alleged fraud committed following which they were arrested. The trio were, however, released on bail by a local court on June 24 on the condition that they should not visit GCA office for the next 15 days.
