It has been a few months since lanky pacer Morne Morkel retired from international Test cricket. However, his presence within the South African ranks remains to be quite profound, to say the least. At the moment, the Proteas are doing battle with Sri Lanka, and having lost the first Test in Galle, Faf du Plessis and his band of merry men have seemingly become one of those teams which are ‘Lions at Home, and Lambs away’.

As they await the second Test in Colombo, something they will be hoping to make a mark in, the erstwhile Morne Morkel was seen at the Wimbledon final when South African Kevin Anderson went into battle with the legendary Novak Djokovic. In fact, Morkel was seen sitting in the player’s box and perarched behind Anderson’s girlfriend as his friend did battle on center-court.

It was a particularly one-sided final however this time around in Wimbeldon. Although the group stages and the quarterfinals had indeed been somewhat of a spectacle to watch, it was quite clear that Morkel’s buddy Anderson simply did not have the firepower to match that of Anderson’s as he was defeated by the then three-time champion Djokovic.

This would also seem as Djokovic’s rise back from the dumps into reckoning once again. He claimed his fourth Wimbledon title and 12th Grand Slam of all-time.

As far as Morkel is concerned, after having announced his retirement, he immediately signed a Kolpak deal with English county club Surrey and has been quite impressive for them with the ball in recent times. Should Surrey have any hopes of making back from relegation into the top-flight, they will certainly do it with the firepower of the 34-year old Morkel.
