After winning the World T20 last year which was hosted by India, West Indies captain Darren Sammy was seen openly criticising the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). It is no rocket science to guess the reason for his ouster from the team ever since, but Sammy has no regrets for it whatsoever.

Between 2004 to 2016, the 33-year-old Caribbean all-rounder featured in 38 Tests, 126 one-days and 66 T20 internationals for West Indies. He received praises from all over the world for guiding his team to their second World T20 title last year.

But his outburst on the presentation ceremony after winning the championship was not to the liking of the WICB officials. Following that incident, he had lost his place in the side permanently. But he does not care about national team selections anymore.

“What I said on the podium after winning the final, I said it from my heart. I said what I had to. I expected things to happen. But I don’t lose sleep over it anymore. God has blessed me tremendously. He is my selector. So I am not worried about what is going to happen. I still do care about West Indies cricket, but if I am not selected, I am not going to sulk over it,” Sammy said.

He is a renowned player in all the T20 leagues over the world. He is now in India as a part of Kings XI Punjab team in the IPL, but is yet to play a match for them this year. He received a call up in the tournament a bit late, due to an injury which he sustained in the Hong Kong League in March. “I am just waiting for my opportunity. Obviously, the coaching staff is trying to get the right combination. I also came in late from injury, so I am just waiting for my chance,” he said.

Kings XI are currently holding the 5th position in the points table, and are still in the race for the play-offs spot. With Hashim Amla and David Miller not available now, we might witness Sammy in the red-and-silver jersey this year.
