Former West Indies cricketer Sir Viv Richards believes that the Indian team has become a very strong outfit in the world cricket at the moment. They have managed to do well in all the three formats of the game. Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, team India recently registered emphatic series wins in the limited overs cricket in South Africa. They failed to win the Test series but managed to hold on to their top spot in rankings.

Viv Richards reckons that all of this has been possible for the Indian team because of the competitive spirit that they have shown in the recent times. He recalled that there used to be a time when the Indian players lacked aggression and were vulnerable against sledging. Now, under Virat Kohli, they have picked up some serious aggression.

“What I know for sure is that he (Kohli) is an exciting player, and I remember in the past, the Indian team used to be very fragile in terms of when the sledging factor came into play, there were some fragileness attached to Indian teams,” Viv Richards was quoted as saying by News18.

On Kapil Dev starting the trend

Commenting further on the same note, Viv Richards reflected back in the timeline to cite the big role that Kapil Dev played in developing the Indian cricket. He remarked that it was Kapil Dev who instilled the competitive spirit in the Indian team. It is worth noting that when Kapil Dev led the Indian team to the World Cup win in 1983, Richards played in the Windies side in the finals and was in command of the run chase. His departure set the tone for the Indian win.

The seeds were sown by Kapil Dev back then and the likes of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli are carrying the legacy forward. In the present days, the Indian team has developed the never back down attitude, which has translated big time in the results for their team.

“Kapil Dev created the avenue for India that you must be competitive. The Indian players have become quite resilient. They do not back down quite easily these days,” he remarked.
