The Brisbane Cricket Ground could be in for an upgradation. News has come in that if the stadium manages to win the bid for hosting the 2032 Olympic Games, then a whopping $1 billion will be provided for its refurbishing.

If the stadium gets refurbished, the capacity is likely to increase by a whopping 50000 seats. There is also likely to be a pedestrian plaza that will act as the connection between the stadium and the Cross River Rail station.

Annastacia Palaszczuk, the Premier of Queensland stated that the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony as well as the athletic action will be the best. She also stated that The Gabba has hosted the Australian Football League (AFL) as well as a lot of cricket matches.

“We’ve hosted the AFL here, we’ve hosted cricket here, but for the Olympics, this is front and center – opening and closing ceremonies, athletics, you name it, it’s going to be the best,” said Palaszczuk to Channel 9.

“The Gabba is one of the most important grounds in Australia,” says Cricket Australia’s Interim CEO

Cricket Australia’s Interim CEO, Nick Hockley said that The Gabba in Brisbane is one of the most historic grounds in Australia. Hockley also added that Cricket Australia is delighted that the Queensland Government has agreed to a redevelopment if Brisbane manages to host the 2032 Olympic Games.

“The Gabba is one of the most important, iconic, and historic cricket grounds in Australia and we are delighted that the Queensland Government has agreed to a major redevelopment should Brisbane win the right to host the 2032 Olympic Games,” said Hockley.

Hockley further added that the 2032 Brisbane Games will equip The Gabba with state-of-the-art facilities that can rival any stadium across the globe. He concluded by stating that Australian cricket is fortunate to have had so many venues undergoing massive upgradation.

“Just as the 2000 Olympics bestowed upon cricket the dual legacies of Stadium Australia and the Sydney Showground – both of which became international cricket venues – so, too, would the 2032 Brisbane Games equip the Gabba with state-of-the-art facilities to rival any stadium in the world. Australian Cricket is fortunate to have had many of its major venues undergo upgrades in recent years and it would be wonderful to see the Gabba joining that list,” concluded Hockley.
