World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten, along with former India opener WV Raman and former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad have been shortlisted for the post of India’s women’s team coach on Thursday. An ad-hoc selection committee comprising among others, former India captain and all-rounder Kapil Dev, recommended the names of the shortlisted candidates to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), it was reported.

The other candidates who were shortlisted out of the 28 applicants for the job include Manoj Prabhakar, Brad Hogg, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Trent Johnston and Kalpana Venkatachar, Times of India cited reports as saying. It also mentioned while three candidates were spoken over face-to-face, five were spoken to over Skype and that included Kirsten while one was spoken to over the phone.

Kirsten is also the head coach of RCB at the moment

Kirsten, one of the best batsmen South Africa have produced with 14,000 international runs under his belt, was the coach of the Indian men’s team between 2008 and 2011 and his stint culminated in the Men in Blue picking up their second title in 50-overs World Cup in 2011. He then coached his home team for two years.

This year, he became the chief coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore replacing New Zealander Daniel Vettori. It will be interesting to see how Kirsten manages two key responsibilities if he bags the coaching role for the Women in Blue. Reports said that he is not eager to leave his IPL assignment.

Finding a new coach for the women’s national team became necessary after former India cricketer Ramesh Powar, who was the coach for an interim period and had a fallout with senior player Mithali Raj during and after the Women’s World T20 in the Caribbeans last month.

Although skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana sought Powar to continue despite his alleged mistreatment of Mithali and former India captain Diana Edulji also backing him, Committee of Administrators chairman Vinod Rai sought fresh applications for the coach’s position and Powar also applied for the same.
