After a 31-run defeat at Edgbaston in Birmingham, India are scheduled to lock horns with England in the second of the five-match Test series at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. India have played 58 Tests on English soil, but could only win six of them. However, two of them have come at the ‘Mecca of Cricket’, the last one coming back in 2014 owing to Ishant Sharma’s brilliance in the second innings.
The Brits, on the contrary, have lost quite a few matches at the venue in the last one decade. Their last defeat came against Pakistan back in May this year when Joe Root’s men were beaten by nine wickets. Virat Kohli and Co are currently 0-1 down in the series and Gautam Gambhir, the Delhi-born cricketer, reckons that it will be extremely difficult for India to make a comeback if they lose the upcoming match.
Tough task ahead for India
“This Test is the most important match in the series. If you are 1-0 down and can’t make a comeback in this Test match and this match goes the other way…as far as I remember, very few teams are there, who have won three matches in a row,” Gambhir was quoted as saying in India Today.
In the meantime, Michael Vaughan, the former English cricketer, believes that England are the favourites to emerge victorious in the encounter at the iconic venue. He also vouched for Kohli, Pujara and Root as the probable players to notch centuries. Moreover, the 43-year old mentioned that the spinners may get assistance from the pitch due to the dry nature of the surface.
The Indian batting faltered at Edgbaston, barring Kohli, who seemed to be in a league of his own. The bowlers, especially Ishant and Ravichandran Ashwin wielded their magic with the leather. However, the performances couldn’t guide India to a much-needed lead. England definitely won’t want to hand India the advantage at Lord’s.
