India’s World Cup hero Gautam Gambhir hanged his boots from the 22 yards last year from all the formats ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Many were contemplating about his post-retirement plans even as there were reports of him joining one of the IPL teams in the coaching staff. However, all the speculations have been put to rest now as the former Indian cricketer has officially entered the politics.
Gautam Gambhir has joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. He will most likely contest the upcoming elections from the New Delhi constituency which is currently held by the party’s Meenakshi Lekhi. Gambhir is a resident of Rajinder Nagar which falls within the constituency. Meenakshi may, in that case, be accommodated in one of the other constituencies in the capital city.

This is a fabulous platform for me
Gautam Gambhir joined the BJP in presence of Union Minister Arun Jaitley and expressed his elation over the same. He is looking forward to do good for the country and is confident of giving his best. “This is a fabulous platform for me to do something good for the country, and I am sure I will do my best. Got inspired by PM Modi and his vision. I am honoured to get the opportunity to join this platform,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Meanwhile, Jaitley also welcomed the former cricketer into the politics and added that the party tries to induct the people who have achieved excellence in their respective fields.
“A very important induction into the party. We try to induct people who have achieved excellence in their own fields. Gautam Gambhir’s past does not show him to be a Pakistan sympathiser,” he said in welcoming the cricketer who brought India all the laurels in 2007 and 2011 World Cups.
