Gautam Gambhir retires as one of India’s most successful openers. Known for his gutsy character, the World Cup-winning star will be fondly remembered for his contribution to Indian cricket. His match-saving knock of 137 against New Zealand in Napier which lasted well over six hours is still fresh in every cricket fan’s mind. But there is absolutely no denying that the 37-year old will be always remembered for his knocks in the final of two World Cups.

In the inaugural edition of the World T20 in South Africa, Gambhir had slammed 75 to help India beat arch-rivals Pakistan in the final and lift their first and only title till date. Four years later, he did the task again. India were in deep trouble while chasing 275 against Sri Lanka in the final as they lost both their in-form openers for just 31. However, Gambhir slammed 97 before MS Dhoni scored an unbeaten 91 to fire India to their second World Cup.

But unfortunately, the left-hander soon lost his form and fell down the pecking order in the team before losing his spot. He last played for India in 2016 during the home Test series against England.

No to politics

Meanwhile, the World Cup-winning star has made it clear that he has no intentions of joining politics. Speculations were rife that Gambhir Gambhir was all set to try his hands in politics and it were further fuelled by his sudden retirement. The speculations started doing the rounds after his tweets which targeted politicians especially the Delhi Government.

Not the one to stay quiet, Gambhir rarely shies away from speaking his mind out on social media. He openly slammed Delhi government for the pollution in the city and was also involved in a heated altercation with politician Omar Abdullah over the death of terrorist Mannan Wani.

Not surprisingly, these turn of events of made many believe that he is set to enter politics. However, in a recent interview, the 37-year old rubbished the rumours of the same. “It is all a rumour. I don’t know who started it,” Gambhir told Mumbai Mirror when asked whether he would join BJP and contest for a Lok Sabha seat.
