The former opening batsman for India Gautam Gambhir said that it was absolutely fine for skipper Virat Kohli to fail at times. In the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Kohli was unable to make a meaningful contribution with the bat in the three tests that he played.

Gambhir made it quite clear that a failure from Virat was acceptable. “Being a young captain and performing so well, that too in his first season, speaks a lot about Virat’s captaincy. After you have had such a consistent run, it is fine to fail in a one or two matches. After all, he is a human being. They are bound to make mistakes. People can’t be unreasonable with their expectations. A batsman can’t go out and score hundreds and double hundreds in every match,” the KKR captain said.

On the back of three brilliant test series’ with the bat, Kohli fell into a slump against the Aussie bowling attack. In the first three tests, Kohli was able to score a total of 46 runs, with 15 being his highest in the series. Earlier in the year, Kohli had become the first batsman to score 4 double centuries in 4 consecutive series. He hit double tons against West Indies, New Zealand, England and Bangladesh in a span of seven months. However, he couldn’t maintain that dream run against the Australians.

As critics found an opportunity to pounce on Kohli for his poor show, Gambhir came out in defence of his skipper. “That is not a fair demand especially when that player is playing all the three formats. The more you play, the more you score but the more you fail as well. The kind of success he has had as a player and skipper this season, we should enjoy that rather than thinking that he has been very cold in this series. It is absolutely fine to fail in two or three matches,” Gambhir added.

Kohli was unfortunate to miss out on the fourth and final test against Australia in Dharamshala. Being ruled out with a shoulder injury, he handed the responsibility of leading the side to Ajinkya Rahane. The hosts won the match convincingly, defeating the Aussies by 8 wickets, and thus regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 2-1 series victory.
