Chris Gayle hammered a belligerent hundred against England in West Indies’ opening encounter of the World T20 and took his team over the line in a run-chase. He thoroughly enjoyed the true bounce on offer at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and will be back at the same venue to face hosts India in the semi-final. Gayle has a massive fan following in India and though the Indians will want their team to win, they will still expect the big Jamaican to entertain them with his trademark sixes.
“Chris Gayle will always be positive, it doesn’t matter which bowler will actually be bowling. Chris Gayle will look to attack. That’s the nature of T20 cricket and that’s the nature of Chris Gayle as well. No names, just the cricket ball, just try to beat it as hard as I can,” Gayle said as quoted by ibnlive.
Ravichandran Ashwin has troubled Gayle in the past and might be asked by MS Dhoni to open bowling at the Wankhede Stadium. Gayle though isn’t worried about the prospect of facing the off-spinner.
“I want to be mentally ready for whichever particular bowler, not just focus on Ashwin. It’s no surprise (Ashwin opening bowling). That always happens. Dhoni always puts Ashwin up early. They have so many bowlers, Nehra is bowling well. With the new ball, Nehra is pretty good. We have to keep our eyes open, play according to the situation,” he said.
The West Indies are coming off an upset defeat in their last group match, where they lost to Afghanistan. About this defeat he Gayle said, “We lost at that particular stage [when] we didn’t want to; we wanted the winning consistency going. But these things happen in cricket. On any particular day any team can beat any team. Disappointed with the loss but we want to get the bad game out of the way. We are just two games away, and then we can lift the trophy.”
