Former batsman George Bailey has been named Australian cricket team’s new chairman of selectors following the retirement of Trevor Hohns. Bailey, who played for Australia between 2012 and 2016, is a veteran of 90 ODIs and 30 T20Is. He has also led the national team in this period. Hence, it would be interesting to see how he performs in his new role.

Notably, the 38-year-old has been a part of Australia’s selection panel since 2019 and now takes on the top position. He certainly has a job in hand with events like T20 World Cup and Ashes taking place later this year. Moreover, the Australia men’s team has endured a difficult time lately and Bailey would be raring to change their fortunes.

There is a lot I will take from Trevor’s style: George Bailey

Speaking of his new role, Bailey lauded Trevor Hohns for his services and said he would like to carry his predecessor’s legacy forward. “Firstly, I would like to thank Trevor for his incredible work which has helped shape the success of Australian cricket over a long period, including during my days as a player and captain,” Cricket.com.au quoted Bailey as per saying.

“In what can be a challenging job Trevor has always been calm, consistent and approachable. Similarly to his journey, he has made my transition from player to selector as smooth as possible. There is a lot I will take from Trevor’s style and very much look forward to the journey ahead,” he added.

For the unversed, Hohns stepped down after collectively serving 21 years as chairman of selectors. His first spell as chairman from 1991 to 2005 saw the Aussie team taking giant strides. The side clinched the 1999 and 2003 World Cups and also enjoyed a sensational run of 16 Test victories. He stepped down from the position following the 2005 Ashes defeat but returned in 2016.

“The game has been great to me and I have loved every minute of it, from the good times to the bad. I have been extremely fortunate to be involved with some of the greatest Australian teams of all time and many of the best players to have played the game,” said Hohns.
