Australian pace legend Glenn McGrath’s record wicket-tally seems to be in danger of being eclipsed by James Anderson. The legendary Aussie pacer has an impeccable bowling record, having accumulated 563 wickets in his 13 years of cricket. McGrath’s record can seemingly be eclipsed by James Anderson, who recently reached the milestone of 450 wickets in the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka.

In spite of being from the opposite end of the rivalry, McGrath wished Anderson good luck in eclipsing his record. However, the Aussie also added that it was up to Anderson to stay in the park for as long as he could.

“That’s entirely up to him; if he stays in the park, then he can do that (break McGrath’s record) quite easily and knock me off. And good luck to him,” McGrath said.

“He’s a quality bowler, there’s no doubt about that. When he’s firing and the ball’s swinging, he’s as tough [to face] as any bowler going around. He’s played 115 Tests now, which for a fast bowler to play over 100 is exceptional. He’s still bowling well, and he’s still taking wickets.”

Since 2010, Anderson has shown his wares across frontiers and accounted for 303 wickets at an impressive average of 25.14. Anderson has also largely maintained his fitness levels and hasn’t been held back by too many injuries in the recent past.

“You become a little bit more experienced and you know how to go about things,” McGrath explained. “You learn how to recover, and out in the middle, you know about taking wickets, creating pressure and setting batsmen up. I think you just know yourself better the way you work and how you work at your best. Anderson would definitely know that now and would be making sure he’s always recovering well.

“You have to stay fit and strong, and injury free. Anderson has had a few issues in the past but he’s come back well, and [how long he plays is] up to him now really. I was lucky enough to play through until I was 37, so I’m sure he’s still got plenty of overs left in him.”
