Former Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath believes that the Indian team will have their strugggles in England this season as well. He remarked that the visiting team will have to come up with a very good intent to succeed in the English conditions. As the tour is approaching, the cricket pundits are predicting their scorelines for the series. All eyes are on the player battle between James Anderson and Virat Kohli.

The last time team India toured England, Kohli averaged less than 15 with the bat and struggled against Anderson. Glenn McGrath admitted that Kohli is an improved cricketer now but added that Anderson in English conditions is any day very lethal. He feels India will be foolish if they rely only on Kohli on the tour.

“Kohli is a more experienced player now. Quality player, no doubt about that. But English conditions are very tough. When you have got a bowler like Jimmy Anderson, who is bowling well now, it is going to be hard work. You got to be prepared to work hard. Kohli is a quality player so I am looking forward to that contest,” Glenn McGrath quoted.

“You always want your best batsman performing. However, it also gives another batsmen a chance to put his hand up and there are still some quality batsmen there, some quality players there. If India are really depending on one player, they have got it wrong,” he added further.

On Pujara’s role in the side

Commenting further on the same lines, Glenn McGrath remarked that Cheteshwar Pujara will have a big role to play in the series as well. Albeit Pujara had a lackluster time in the County this season, McGrath feels that his experience of playing in England will help the Indian team.

“I have not seen what the conditions are like in the UK. Pujara, even though he hasn’t got runs, he will be there. Just being used to the conditions, I think that will help him,” McGrath noted.

On Indian bowlers

When asked to pick the Indian bowlers who he believes will succeed in England, Glenn McGrath took the names of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah. He remarked that both bowlers have great control over their skills with the ball. While Bhuvneshwar can exploit the English conditions with his swing bowling, Bumrah can succeed owing to his excellent consistent lines and lengths.

“Bhuvi and Bumrah. They have got pretty good control. That’s what you need, especially in England. The Dukes ball has a pronounced seam. If you get the ball in the right areas consistently, then you are going to do well. The ball will do a little bit, so yeah.. they will do well,” said the former Australian cricketer.
