After a day off, the Global T20 Canada proceded into the second round of the league stage. In the second round, each team gets to play one game each. The first team will play the sixth team in the points table, the second team gets to play the fifth team and so on. Hence, in the first encounter, Cricket West Indies-B were up against the Montreal Tigers which was followed by the game between Vancouver Knights and Toronto Nationals.

Cricket West Indies-B finished the first round at the top with 8 points. They won 4 out of the 5 games that they played. On the other hand, Montreal Tigers only managed to win one game and hence were the last team in the points table. Irrespective of the result of the game, the Tigers qualifying into the playoffs is quite a difficult scenario.

Chris Gayle’s Vancouver Knights ended second on the points table with 3 wins and a no result game in their five games. Darren Sammy’s Toronto Nationals on the other hand only managed to win two games out of five to take the fifth spot on the points table. After bagging an embarrassing defeat in this game, the Nationals are now kicked out of the tournament.

CWI-B vs Montreal Tigers – Match 16, Round 2

Montreal Tigers’ skipper Lasith Malinga won the toss and opted to bowl first. Furthermore, Malinga struck right in the first over when he dismissed Sherfane Rutherford for just 2 runs. Soon, the in-form Brandon King was also dismissed by Sandeep Lamichhane after he scored 23 off 10 balls. With the help of almost a run-a-ball 25 from Nicolas Pooran, Shamar Springer built a partnership of 72. Despite this good start, Tigers kept chipping in with regular wickets and gave away only 15 runs in the last three overs to pull things back.

CWI-B were restricted to 162 for 7 in 20 overs as Sandeep picked 3 wickets in the innings. But still, the job was only half done. Tigers had to chase the target down in 12.5 overs to at least get their NRR positive to give themselves an outside chance. However, their opener Nicholas Kirton was dismissed for 3 runs just in the second over. But then, Sunil Narine took the attack onto the opposition from there on. He scored 61 off 25 balls. But, none of the other batsmen played aggressive cricket to finish the game within 12.5 overs. They got there in 17.3 overs and will be happy with a win to finish things off.

Brief Scores:

CWI-B: 162/7 in 20 overs (Shamar Springer 62, N Pooran 25, Sandeep Lamichhane 3/31)

MNT: 165/4 in 17.3 overs (Sunil Narine 61, Sikandar Raza 32*, Khary Pierre 2/25)

Vancouver Knights vs Toronto Nationals – Match 17, Round 2

The Knights won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Nations were pathetic with the bat. Opener Johnson Charles was dismissed for a golden duck while Kamran Akmal was out for nine. In-form batsmen, Anton Devcich and Nitish Kumar were out for 1 and 0 respectively. However, Steve Smith (35 off 28 balls) and Darren Sammy (29 off 23 balls) ensured that the teams’ total crossed 100. They were bowled out for just 103. Andre Russell and Fawad Ahmed picked 3 wickets each.

The Knights couldn’t have asked for an easier chase than this one. In fact, the regular opener, Chris Gayle didn’t even come out to bat. Openers Chadwick Walton with a 54 and Ben Dunk with a 24 set the chase up. The team chased the target down in just 12.3 overs. Anton Devcich and Kieron Pollard picked one wicket each. With the win, the Knights moved up to the top of the points table.

Brief Scores:

TTN: 103/10 in 16.5 overs (Steve Smith 35, Darren Sammy 29, Andre Russell 3/17)

VCK: 104/2 in 12.3 overs (Chadwick Walton 54*, Ben Dunk 24, Kieron Pollard 1/4)
