Former England off-spinner Graeme Swann has revealed that he is not one to rush into appointing Joe Root as the next skipper of the England Test side, especially given the developmental stage that the 26-year old is in at this point in his career to say the least. However, when asked who the perfect candidate was for the England cricket team in the near future, Swann went ahead and stated that he’d like to see Stuart Broad as the next captain of the Test team.

This comes shortly after the stepping down of Alastair Cook given the fact that he took the delve into stepping down from his position following the terrible series against India wherein Cook’s side lost 4-0. However, despite this, the fact is that most of his teammates barring Ben Stokes had pretty poor outings. Moreover, there were those such as Ian Chappell and Geoffrey Boycott who stated that they wanted Cook out.

While the establishment stuck with Cook in Tests, the latter voluntarily recanted on his decision and opted to step down as skipper. At the moment, a few hats in the ring are those of Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler along with Joe Root. Who gets the job remains to be seen.

The Test match pundit said, “I think I’m the only person in the world who says no to Joe Root as England captain. If it was down to me right now I’d give Stuart Broad the job. I think Joe is growing into more of a mature player and he is trying to be more serious and trying to prove to everyone that he’s got the character as a captain.”
