Virat Kohli’s Test record in England isn’t impressive by any means. He last toured the nation in 2014 under the leadership of MS Dhoni and managed to score only 134 runs at an average of 13.40. However, he has refurbished his skills thereafter and has racked up runs at will in every format across the globe. He is currently the skipper of the Indian team in all the formats.

The national team has done reasonably well in the last couple of years and Kohli’s captaincy and his stupendous prowess with the bat have been some of the factors behind their impressive run. He now has the responsibility to lead the Indian team in the five-match Test series against England and the first match begins on August 1 at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

In India’s previous Test series in the nation, the visiting team slumped to a 1-3 defeat after winning the second Test at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Meanwhile, Graham Gooch, the former English cricketer reckons that the Indian captain’s hunger to improve his records on English soil can be a dangerous prospect for the home team.

We are not playing Test cricket as we would like to

“He is a top-ranked player in the world at the moment and I think a dangerous customer for England as he has the motivation to improve his record in this country. Every player wants to be known to be able to play well in all sorts of conditions. And Virat Kohli is very determined to do well. I think he has got a point to prove, he has got a good all-round side, got some good spinners,” he told BCCI.tv.

England have strained in the recent past in Test cricket. They slumped against Australia in the Ashes and then lost their away series against New Zealand. The Three Lions also lost the first Test of Pakistan’s tour of the nation. Nevertheless, they came back to win the next match at Headingley in Leeds and level the series. While Gooch wanted England to win, he also admitted that the Brits need to perform better in the format.

“As an Englishman, I would want England to win but our form in Test cricket hasn’t been that good recently. We did very poorly in the winter in Australia, beaten 0-4, beaten by New Zealand, drew against Pakistan. We are not playing Test cricket as we would like to. We have some very good cricketers but they need to perform,” the former cricketer added.
