Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Shubman Gill was caught short of his ground and got run out in the group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on May 3 (Tuesday). Winning the toss, GT skipper Hardik Pandya decided to bat first at the Dr. D.Y. Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai.

However, his decision backfired soon. GT openers had a sedate start with 17/0 in just two overs. Gill, who was looking to settle in, had already stroked two boundaries. However, during the third over of the first innings, Gill dabbed pacer Sandeep Sharma’s ball towards the cover region and set off for a run. An excellent piece of fielding from all-rounder Rishi Dhawan caught Gill short of his ground.

The right-handed batter was not happy with his dismissal as he thought that the bowler came in his way, but Sandeep did not move from his position and Gill was the victim of some excellent piece of fielding from Rishi stationed at the cover region.

Shubman Gill has not been able to convert his start to big innings

The right-handed batter has got some starts throughout the tournament so far, but he has not been able to convert them to big ones consistently. In the last two fixtures, he did contribute immensely in helping GT get off to a good start in both their run chases where they eventually succeeded in getting the job done.

The right-handed batter stroked an excellent 96 in just 59 balls against the same opponent, stroking 11 fours and one maximum during their first meeting earlier in the season. However, Gill could not replicate the same performance against PBKS on May 3 (Tuesday).

Meanwhile, the new entrants have already lost four crucial wickets of Gill, Wriddhiman Saha, skipper Hardik Pandya, and David Miller at the end of 12 overs with the score being 73/4. It will now depend on the lower-middle batting order of GT if they manage to put a decent total on the board and defend it later on.
