Gujarat Lions all-rounder Dwayne Bravo was reprimanded by the match referee for showing dissent at the umpire’s decision during last evening’s Indian Premier League match against defending champions Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium.
Bravo admitted to the level 1 offence (Article 2.1.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials) and accepted the sanction.
The incident happened in the 13th over of the match when he lost his wicket to MI pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Chasing the modest target of 144, Bravo was in the middle with the ‘man of the match’ Aaron Finch. Lions were in a crunch situation needing 61 from 48 balls and had just lost Dinesh Kartik in the previous over.
Bumrah surprised the West Indian all-rounder with a quick short delivery which put the batsman in double mind. Bumrah benefitted from the doubt in his mind and managed to force Bravo play a double shot.
He eventually missed the ball which went to the wicket-keeper. The ball appeared to have taken a nick, making the bowler and the keeper make a loud appeal. The umpire agreed with the appeal and raised his finger, taking Bravo by surprise.
Bravo was not happy with the decision. The TV replays later showed that the ball had not taken any edge and it was the late swing which confused the umpire to think that the ball has edged.
Lions went on to lose a clump of wicket afterwards but eventually reached home safe and registered their third consecutive win, defeating Mumbai by three wickets, thanks to opener Aaron Finch’s unbeaten 67-run knock.
