The new entrants Gujarat Titans (GT) scripted history by winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) in their very first attempt. The GT side played excellent cricket throughout the tournament and eventually won the final match by a margin of seven wickets.

In the final encounter against Rajasthan Royals, the Titans from Gujarat chased down 131 in 18.1 overs with opener Shubman Gill finishing the match with a handsome six. The right-handed batter pulled West Indies pacer Obed McCoy for a six over square leg on the first ball of the 19th over and completed a stunning campaign for the new entrants.

Meanwhile, the official Twitter account of GT shared a post drawing a comparison between their title triumph and India’s 2011 World Cup victory, which brought jubilation to millions across the country. It must be noted that GT’s head coach Ashish Nehra was a part of that World Cup-winning squad. Similarly, Gary Kirsten, who is now associated with the new team, was the Indian head coach during the 2011 World Cup. Meanwhile, Lasith Malinga and Kumar Sangakkara, who were a part of the Sri Lanka playing XI against India, are now part of the RR camp.

Gill’s six sent the Ahmedabad crowd into ecstasy, reminding fans of the iconic finish by MS Dhoni. “Number 7 jersey. Finishing with a 6. Gary [Kirsten] and Nehraji [Ashish Nehra] celebrating. Beating Sanga [Kumar Sangakarra] and [Lasith] Malinga’s team. Where have we seen this before?”, Gujarat Titans tweeted.

Coming to the final match, Rajasthan Royals won the toss and opted to bat first. The team had a decent start with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler batting with intent. However, GT bowled with some excellent lines and lengths to restrict RR to just 130 runs. Skipper Hardik Pandya scalped three wickets for his side.

In reply, the newbies did stutter a bit at the start, but Shubman Gill and skipper Pandya steadied the ship and did most of the scoring. After Pandya got out, David Miller came and started playing his shots and fhe finishing touch was given by Gill after hitting a massive six off McCoy.
