Ben Stokes is the most discussed name in the sporting world at the moment. After his heroics at Leeds, Headingley, last weekend that came in the wake of his special act in the final of the ICC World Cup, the 28-year-old is being loved and admired by all. The southpaw slammed 135 not out in the third Test against Australia to give his team a miraculous victory after England lost nine wickets for 286 runs while chasing 359.

Stokes’ special effort made people made all kinds of dedication towards him. And now, his match-winning epic innings saw himself receiving a jersey from Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. Stokes was clearly bowled over by the gesture and he responded saying on Tweet, “I guess I’m now officially a Spurs fan.”

Stokes added 76 unbeaten runs with No.11 Jack Leach to help the Three Lions level the series 1-1 with two more games to go. England were bowled out for a mere 67 in the first innings in reply to Australia’s 179 and then scripted the miraculous performance to come back into the series. Stokes was chosen as the man of the match in both the second Test at Lord’s that was drawn and the third Test.

Stokes now is a loyal Spurs supporter

On receiving the special gift from the football club, Stokes admitted that he has never been a football fan but also revealed that the first-ever football jersey that he had received was also a Tottenham one – a blue and yellow kit. He said the fact that he received yet another jersey from the same club showed that he is officially a Spurs fan now.

The club, too, was overwhelmed by Stokes’ response. “Love this! Welcome to the Spurs family @benstokes38!” it said. Even their captain Harry Kane, who is also the skipper of the England side, wished Stokes the best. “Good choice! Good luck for the rest of the Ashes and you’d be more than welcome to a game once the series is finished,” he said.

The fourth Ashes Test begins at Old Trafford on September 4.
