South Africa suffered another early exit from yet another ICC event, as England beat Sri Lanka yesterday, eliminating both Sri Lanka and South Africa from the World T20 2016. South Africa still has one more match to play, against Sri Lanka at the Ferozeshah Kotla at Delhi on 28th March.

Former South African captain Hashim Amla said that South Africa will win an ICC event real soon and also mentioned that next year’s Champions Trophy may be that title. South Africa have had a jinx with them, since their readmission into international cricket, of not winning any ICC tournament and choking in pressure situations.

“We are asked this every ICC tournament. This team will win World Cup or an ICC tournament at some stage. We won in 1998 in England and it’s quite a while back.It has been disappointing. We had opportunities we have not backed up batting and bowling to be in semis,” said Amla.

South Africa lost to England after making 229 at Mumbai, defeated Afghanistan and lost to West Indies on a turning pitch at Nagpur. They were absolutely outplayed in every department and were hampered by an injury to JP Duminy, which completely threw off their team balance.

When asked about the batting combination and other plans before the World T20, Amla said, “ before coming to this tournament, the captain and coach talked about picking the right team according to the venue. In India, pitches have been vastly different. In Mumbai, there was smaller field, so quick bowlers come into the picture that’s why Dale played the first one against England but after that Nagpur was a slow wicket and slow seemed to be more effective.”

He also said that most of the seniors will be played the Champions Trophy next year and that might be the title that South Africa will win and break their jinx. Amla also said that the team was looking to end the tournament on a bang and leave the tournament on a high.
