Hashim Amla, the former South African cricketer, didn’t have the best of times at the international circuit of late. The veteran looked completely out of sorts and his position in the national team somewhat came under the scanner. He wasn’t getting runs on a consistent basis and also seemed to lack fluency in his batting. Amla couldn’t resurrect his fortunes even during the 2019 World Cup.

He could hardly deliver at the top of the order and was also out for a few games due to an injury. Recently, he announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket, bringing down the curtains on his 15-year-old journey. In his career, which spanned 349 international games, the experienced Amla notched 18,672 runs including 55 centuries and 88 scores in excess of 50.

Hashim Amla- a great ambassador of the game

He remains the quickest batsman to 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 and 7000 runs in the ODI format. Hashim Amla also captained the Proteas team in the 2002 Under-19 World Cup. He was also the skipper of the national team in 2014 for 14 matches after Graeme Smith hung his boots from the sport. In 2010 and 2013, the dynamic was named as the South Africa Cricketer of the Year.

He will be available to play domestic matches and the Mzansi Super League (MSL). In a statement after retiring, Amla thanked Almighty for granting him the Proteas journey. After he bid adieu, Amla was showered with praises from every nook and corner of the cricketing fraternity for his services to Proteas cricket. In the meantime, Ravi Shastri, the head coach of Team India, also wished Amla.

Shastri, who’s currently on a 45-day extension period in his role, called Amla as one of the greatest ambassadors of the game. Shastri also called him a cricketing giant. He took to Twitter and wrote, “One of the great ambassadors of the great game. A South African cricket GIANT. Humility personified at all times – @amlahash. God bless,”
