Hashim Amla stepped down as the South African captain after the end of New Year’s Test match at Cape Town against England. Amla had a great start to his captaincy career as he had 4 wins in the first 6 matches he led with other 2 ending in a draw.
He was known as a captain who could make bold decisions and also led SA to a long-awaited Test series win in Sri Lanka. However, Amla faced some tough days as a captain and also as a batsman in last 5-6 months. His side failed to win a single Test match in this period even after playing 8 matches. Tough time continued for him even as a batsman as he could strike only 1 fifty plus score in 2015 year in the format scoring less than 300 runs in 8 matches played.
Following Amla’s resignation as captain, AB de Villiers will be taking up captaincy of longer format at least till the end of this series becoming the 34th Test captain of South Africa.
