Australia pacer Pat Cummins is currently enjoying a break away from the sport. He was one of the few cricketers to pull out of Australia’s West Indies and Bangladesh tours due to the bubble fatigue after returning from the Indian Premier League (IPL) which was suspended midway due to COVID cases inside the bubble.
No wonder he is spending some quality time with his wife Becky Boston. On Tuesday, the pace bowler decided to do a Q&A session on his Youtube Channel and interact with the fans. He was bombarded with a lot of questions and one of the fans asked him to pick the most complete Test among batsman among the current lot of cricketers.
Responding to the question, Pat Cummins first clarified that he is biased in this and picked Steve Smith as the most complete batsman in the longest format of the game. However, the 28-year-old gave a valid explanation for the same stating that former Australia skipper has scored runs wherever he has played and in all type of conditions.
“I am going with Steve Smith. He scored hundreds everywhere, in Australia with fast and bouncy tracks, in SA on green seaming wickets, in England with swinging Dukes and in India on spin fest wickets. He gets to solve whatever problem he has in front of him. He’s better than anyone currently,” Cummins said.
Steve Smith’s performance in Tests
Well, one shouldn’t fault Pat Cummins for picking his teammate as the best Test batsman in modern day cricket. Steve Smith has certainly been in sensational form in the whites for Australia. The man went through some tough time against India at home during the 2019-20 season and even then, he managed to score a century in the Sydney Test which ended in a draw.
Overall, Smith has played 77 Tests in his career amassing 7540 runs at a brilliant average of 61.8. He has also smashed 27 tons, three of which are double centuries, and 31 fifties. The 2019 Ashes series in England was one of the best for him. It was also a comeback series for him and David Warner in the format post their 12-month bans. While the latter failed to impress, Steve Smith played match-winning knocks and helped Australia retain the urn.
