In November, the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) named Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. He replaced Ravi Shastri for the next two years. Dravid’s name was always making the rounds ever since he travelled with the Indian team for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka in July 2021.

In an interview with Boria Majumdar, Saurav Ganguly president of BCCI, said a number of things related to Dravid’s appointment and named one former Indian cricketer who was very keen to become the next head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Ganguly mentioned that VVS Laxman was also interested in becoming the team’s head coach; however, things didn’t work out.

“He was keen on the national team job, but that couldn’t worked out. But somewhere down the line, he will have that opportunity to coach the national team,” Ganguly was quoted by Hindustan Times.

Saurav Ganguly reveals how hard it was to convince Rahul Dravid to become the national coach

Ganguly further revealed that it was not easy to convince Dravid to take this position. The reason behind Dravid’s refusal was that the team was always on the road for almost eight to nine months. However, he agreed to become the team’s coach for the next two years after Ganguly managed to convince him.

“We had Rahul in mind for a long period of time, both me and Jay, but he wasn’t agreeing because of the time away from home [and] because doing a national team’s job is [about being] on the road for about 8-9 months in a year and he has two young children,” he said.

Under Dravid’s coaching, India defeated New Zealand in the T20I series by a margin of 3-0. The Indian team then went on to win the Test series by a margin of 1-0 against the inaugural World Test Champion.

On the other hand, Laxman took over as the head of the National Cricket Academy, and he replaced Dravid, who was the head of the NCA and the coach of the Under-19 team and the India A team for a period of four years. Laxman will be the head of the NCA for the next three years and has shifted from Hyderabad to Bangalore.
