India have advanced to the top of the ICC World Test Championship points table after registering a stunning 157-run win over England in the fourth Test. The game saw several twists and turns as both teams were leaving no stones unturned to emerge victoriously. In fact, all three results seemed possible even at the end of Day 4. However, the visiting team held their nerves in the latter stages and walked away with a comprehensive win.

Speaking of how the game panned out, England won the toss and invited India to bat first at the Kennington Oval. The decision proved to be spot on as the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals. While Virat Kohli scored a valiant half-century, there wasn’t any significant contribution from the top order. However, Shardul Thakur’s timely cameo of 57 runs took India to 191 runs. While Chris Woakes took four wickets for England, Ollie Robinson got three scalps.

Notably, Virat Kohli’s men suffered an innings defeat in the last game and another batting failure didn’t please fans and experts. Moreover, England scored 290 in their first innings, earning a hefty lead of 99 runs. At this stage, the home team’s win seemed a mere formality. However, India didn’t put their guards down and scripted a jaw-dropping comeback.

While opener Rohit Sharma slammed a sensational hundred in the second innings, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur got half-centuries. There were notable contributions from tail-enders Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah as well. As a result, India advanced to 466 in their second innings, asking England to chase 368.

Although the target seemed daunting, England got off to a brilliant start with openers Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns added 100 runs. However, things changed drastically after the first wicket went down. Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav made the red cherry talk and rattled England’s batting order. As a result, the hosts got bundled out for 210, handing India a 157-run win. With this triumph, the visitors also gained an unassailable 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

India advance to the top position

As mentioned above, this win saw India going to the top of the WTC points table. The Virat Kohli-side now has 26 points with their points percentage being 54.17%. On the other hand, England remained at the fourth place with 14 points and 24.19% percentage points. The second and third spots are occupied by Pakistan and West Indies respectively. Both sides have 12 points alongside 50% percentage points.
