Aakash Chopra, the former Indian cricketer, reckons that MS Dhoni’s task as the skipper of the national team wasn’t a cakewalk by any means. Dhoni took over at a time when India were reeling after a disastrous campaign in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. He led for the first time in the T20 World Cup in the same year and from there on, he didn’t look back.

Earlier, Gautam Gambhir, who won two World Cups under Dhoni, said that the Jharkhand-born didn’t give India a lot of match-winners. Rather, he said that Sourav Ganguly brought forth a number of newbies and turned them into world beaters. However, Chopra dismissed Gambhir’s opinions, saying that Dhoni helped in the transition of the team.

As per the veteran, Dhoni came to charge at a time when the big guns of Indian cricket were past their prime. He also said that the likes of Murali Vijay, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and Yuzvendra Chahal started playing under Dhoni.

A person like MS Dhoni was required there, says Chopra

“He is absolutely right that Sourav Ganguly gave a lot of match-winners to India. Dada even took over captaincy when cricket was in difficulty due to the black clouds of match-fixing hovering over it and the public’s belief lost. From that situation to develop a team that went abroad and won, the eye for talent was absolutely fantastic,” Chopra was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

“In my opinion, Dhoni’s task was very difficult and a person like Dhoni was only required there, who could manage the team tactically with care and also manage the transition,” Chopra stated.

“According to me, it is a wrong comparison and it is a slightly incorrect outcome as well. I personally don’t agree with the opinion, I feel the team that Kohli got was assembled with great love by MS Dhoni,” Chopra added.

Both Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly helped Indian cricket scale great heights. Ganguly’s captaincy tenure started when the Indian team was marred with match-fixing scandals. But Dada, as Sourav is popularly known, took the onus on himself and changed the face of Indian cricket with some positive attitude.
