Hotstar app has turns out to be a hot property gets record views during the first match of the IPL 2015: Since this is the world of internet and smart phones, broadcasters for cricket matches are quite conscious and don’t want to lose out on this underexplored market of mobile viewers. The Star India before the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 8 had not only launched but powerfully promoted their latest app the Hotstar app, which gives viewers the option of not only watching movies on demand, along with TV but also stream live matches. And now we hear from Star India that their app has started off strongly and recorded 7.2 million during the first game of the IPL 2015.

The figures released are almost 6 times the number of viewers that watched the opening match on the Starsports.com website during IPL 7. These numbers and the response viewers are giving to the hotstar app has prompted the broadcasters that it might well break global viewership records with hoststar. Star India COO, Mr. Sanjay Gupta said, “The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 witnessed unprecedented viewership in India, both on TV and digital. The tournament logged record views on digital from the opening day itself and broke the internet during the India–Pakistan game. Mobile has emerged as a preferred platform for the 87 million Indians, and we will look to renew the fans’ relationship with their sport again with the Pepsi IPL on Hotstar.”

With a rising trend in the traffic that they are attracting Star is already claiming that by the end of the IPL, i.e. 60 matches this season, the number of fans might well cross the 100 million mark. The recent success that they enjoyed with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, being the official broadcasters in India, they had registered 340 million hits on their videos and overall 13.5 billion hits through the tournament, this making the World Cup 2015 the most viewed sporting event in the history of digital world.

Star India must be a happy lot by now as their attempt to knock a new zone of viewers with the Hotstar app; launching it a couple of weeks before the World Cup 2015. The app recorded almost 15 million downloads in a month of its launch; thus prompting Star Sports to go ahead with its initiative and target the viewers during the IPL as well, which they have eventually started at a high.
