Joe Root who took over as the England’s Test captain from Alastair Cook banks on his ex-skipper to break the shackles and smash all the records. Root believes that the 32-year-old will be a huge presence in the dressing room for him. Though Cook is out of form, he is still the best Test batsman England have. He has scored a total of 11,057 runs in and all the batsmen ahead of him have retired.

The star England batsman and now the captain of the England cricket team believes Cook can do it. “I think he’s looking forward to the opportunity to just go and bat, hopefully he’s going to smash every record going. It would be nice to see him just enjoy his batting and go on and break every record going,” Root said while talking at his home ground.

The 26-year-old has very little experience when it comes to captaincy. Same was the case when he was picked up for the Test squad for his batting. But he believes he will do the things his own way, Root said, “I like to think I’ll be able to put my stamp on things and do things my way. I didn’t have much county experience before I got onto the Test team and I managed to find a way to be successful in that environment.

His captaincy will be put to test in July. He has a lot of time to think and introspect. He knows and infers that he will have to be instinctive and he wants to make England a tough side. He said: “I think the beauty of the position right now is I have plenty of time to think about that. I’d like to think I’d be quite instinctive, I want us to always look to win and I want us to be a tough side to play against.”

He is even excited for the Ashes as he believes England have a perfect mixture of raw talent and experience. “I can’t wait for the Ashes. We should all be very excited about that. We have a great blend of experience and raw talent.”

England’s focus for now would be on the Champions Trophy. They host the mega event and have the home advantage. The odds are in their favour this time but they will have to play out of their skins to lift the trophy with defending champions India and the likes of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand in great form as well. Their limited-overs captaincy, for now, will remain with Eoin Morgan.
