Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has had a pretty good record as the Delhi Capitals’ coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise made it to the final of the cash-rich league for the first time in the previous season. Apart from a few Indian players, Ponting shares good relations with a couple of Australian cricketers – Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis – in the team.

During a recent interaction, he shed light on the kind of a player Stoinis is while also opening up about the all-rounder’s role in the team. The 46-year-old pointed out how Stoinis hasn’t been able to nail down a spot in Australian team with many good batsmen in the line-up.

However, Ricky Ponting asserted that there is complete clarity about Marcus Stoinis’ role in the Delhi Capitals side in the IPL. “With Australia, he’s been in and out of the side, and not really found a spot in the batting line-up. I’ve tried to make it pretty clear to him where I see him slotting in with the Delhi Capitals outfit and the role he’s going to play for us,” Ponting said while speaking to cricket.com.au.

He is a hard worker, says Ponting about Stoinis

Moreover, Ricky Ponting praised Marcus Stoinis for giving it his everything for the team he plays while also stating that the latter loves to perform the all-rounder’s role. Stoinis was one of the key players for DC in them making it to the final of IPL 2020.

“He is a hard worker. He likes to bat and bowl as much as anyone we’ve had at Delhi. So as long as I give some clear direction and he understands what he’s doing and what his role is, I just let him go about getting himself prepared. I’ll only interfere with players’ preparation if I think they’re bludging and they’re not doing the right thing,” Ponting further added.

As far as the second leg of the IPL is concerned, the Delhi Capitals will be resuming their campaign on September 22 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The team is at the top of the points table with six wins from eight matches.
