Australia skipper Steve Smith believes that the grass cover on the Eden Gardens’ wicket is the most he has ever seen on an Indian pitch. The second ODI of the 5-match series between India and Australia will be played in Kolkata on Thursday. The hosts have taken a lead of 1-0 after a comprehensive 26 runs win in Chennai.

The ground was completely covered for almost last 48 hours due to incessant rains in the city ahead of the clash. But they were finally removed for some time only to be put back again as the teams were forced to train indoors for the second day in a row. There are predictions of heavy rain during the match day as well. The Chennai ODI was also marred by the rain as the Aussie were set a stiff target of 164 to chase in just 21 overs.

Playing XI not finalised

Smith had a look at the 22-yard strip on Wednesday morning while the covers were off and was surprised to see the grass on it. He also cleared that the final call on the playing XI will be taken before the game.

“There is a little bit of grass on it. Probably more than I’ve seen in India for a while. Looks alright, few cracks on the wicket but I think don’t think they will play a big part. Looks the wicket’s been used somewhere, I don’t know in what game. I will have another look tomorrow, see how the weather is doing, see if there is any change to the wicket in the morning, see if they might cut the grass; I don’t know. I’ll take a call on the team after considering all this,” the 28-year-old said.

He also stressed on the fact that not being able to practice is not a problem for the Aussies as they have been working hard since landing in the country and should be ready for the game in any circumstances.

“I don’t think it will have any impact. Guys have worked hard since we have been in India and we had a game not that long ago. So guys are in a fine space. It’s been about topping it up indoors and getting a few things right there. No excuses. We are ready to go tomorrow,” Smith concluded.
