'I went into the dressing room crying and took a while to digest' - Shreyas Iyer on testing phase post shoulder injury

India batter Shreyas Iyer has finally recovered from the shoulder injury, which ruled him out of action since March. The 26-year-old got hurt during the team’s limited-overs series against England. Iyer was also subsequently ruled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Delhi Capitals (DC). But now the Mumbai batter is eying a comeback in the second half of the UAE leg of IPL, which is set to begin on September 19.

Iyer also shared few videos on social media of him running on steep mountains to get back in shape. He was also set to play Royal London Cup for Lancashire but pulled out last minute owing to not regaining full fitness. Everything seems to fall in place for the right-hand batter and he will most likely slot in the Capitals lineup as a middle-order batter.

Speaking to India Today, Iyer shed light on how tough was it for him to deal with this untimely injury, when his performances with the bat were consistent for team India. “Currently I’m feeling amazing, the journey was awesome, to be honest. I never hesitated for a while but right after the injury I was sulking a bit and I didn’t know what to do. I went into the dressing room crying and it took me a while to digest it.”

“But at the end of the day, you need to go through all of it. It is a setback which you have to push back and come back strong,” Iyer told India Today’s, Boria Majumdar.

Iyer further opined that he was bemused and left wondering as to what had just happened after the shoulder injury on March 23. “When I realized that I had to go under the knife, it was really hard for me to digest. The way I was training prior to my injury, I was at the highest level.

“And suddenly this freak injury happened and I understand how it happened. But it’s a part and parcel of an athlete’s career so I just accepted that fact,” Iyer said.

Iyer’s team Delhi Capitals is currently leading the points table.
