While many experts of the game and modern-day players have opined that ODI cricket might be irrelevant in the future, India skipper Rohit Sharma has not completely written off One Day Internationals yet. The Indian team have been on a roll in the 50-overs format for now having registered consecutive overseas series wins over England and the West Indies, respectively.

Backing ODI cricket, the ‘Hitman’ has said that cricket is important irrespective of the format. Giving further clarification on the same, he added that whenever India plays any ODI matches, the stadiums are always full, and the excitement remains high. At the same time, the Mumbai cricketer also mentioned that it is an individual’s choice to play a particular format, but for him, all three formats- Tests, ODIs, and T20Is are equally important.

For me, cricket is important – whatever be the format: Rohit Sharma

“For me, cricket is important – whatever be the format,” Rohit was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

“I would never say that ODI is getting finished or T20 is getting finished, or Tests are nearing an end. I wish there is another format as well because, for me, playing the game is most important. Since childhood, we dreamt of playing the game for India. Whenever we play ODIs, stadiums are full, the excitement remains high. It’s an individual choice as to which format to play or not, but for me, all three formats are important”, he added.

The debate over the future of ODI cricket became a hot topic after star England all-rounder Ben Stokes shockingly announced his retirement from the 50-overs format last month, citing a hectic schedule and his inability to give his 100% in that particular format. He continues to make himself available for selection in T20Is and is currently captaining the Three Lions in the home Test series against South Africa.

India’s next ODI assignment will be a three-match series in Zimbabwe starting August 18. Vice-captain KL Rahul will be leading the Indian side. Rohit has been rested for the series as he looks to return on a strong note during the Men in Blue’s Asia Cup 2022 opener against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai on August 28.
